"Senegal's President Leads the Way: Calls for Transparency Across Africa After Public Declaration of Assets"

Civil society organization, The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), has called on African leaders to emulate Senegal's President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in publicly declaring their assets. This call comes as Faye, aged 44, assumed office as Senegal's youngest democratically elected President after winning the March 24, 2024 presidential election.

Faye, representing the opposition African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF), secured victory with 54.3% of the votes. Notably, he made his assets public through a detailed declaration titled 'Heritage Declaration of the Candidate Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye'.

In his declaration, Faye listed his assets and liabilities dating back to October 2007. These included a house, two vehicles, undeveloped plots of land, and bank account balances. He also disclosed his loans and financial obligations.

CHRICED commended Faye for his transparency and emphasized the importance of such actions in promoting good governance. The organization urged other African leaders to follow suit, highlighting the role of transparency in preventing corruption and ensuring accountability.

Additionally, CHRICED advised Faye to prioritize the well-being of Senegalese citizens, particularly in managing anticipated oil revenue. The organization emphasized the need for responsible leadership to avoid the pitfalls experienced by other oil-rich nations.

Looking beyond Senegal, CHRICED urged Faye to work towards reviving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). It emphasized the importance of ECOWAS in promoting regional integration, free movement, and economic partnership.

In conclusion, CHRICED expressed hope that Faye's presidency would mark a new era of transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership in Senegal and across the African continent.
