Former Nigeria Labour Congress President Ali Ciroma's Passing Mourned, Leaves a Legacy of Advocacy and Solidarity"


Former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ali Ciroma, passed away on Tuesday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The veteran unionist's death was announced by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who serves as the Secretary of the Borno State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, in a statement released on the same day.


Ciroma, who served as the NLC president from 1984 to 1988 during the Ibrahim Babagida military regime, played a significant role in the Nigerian labor movement. His tenure witnessed pivotal moments in the history of workers' rights and collective bargaining in Nigeria.


In recent years, Ciroma remained active in the labor movement, advocating for the welfare of workers and the protection of their rights. He was known for his unwavering commitment to the principles of social justice and equality.


The passing of Ciroma marks the end of an era in Nigerian trade unionism. His contributions to the labor movement will be remembered and celebrated by generations to come.


The funeral arrangements for Ciroma have been announced to take place on Wednesday, with a burial scheduled for 4 pm at his residence along Galadima Road near the Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home) in Maiduguri. The occasion is expected to be attended by family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers who will pay their final respects to the departed leader.


Ciroma's legacy will continue to inspire labor activists and advocates for workers' rights across Nigeria and beyond. His dedication to the cause of labor will be remembered as a cornerstone of the struggle for social justice and equity in the country.
