Atiku Pledges Support for Obi in 2027, Opens Door for Possible Merger with Labour Party

In a recent development, former Nigerian Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, expressed his willingness to throw his support behind Peter Obi, should the PDP decide to nominate him as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Atiku made this statement during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, affirming his commitment to abide by the party's decision regarding the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South or specifically the South-East. He reiterated that his decision to contest the 2023 presidential ticket was due to its openness to all party members.

Atiku's declaration comes after a meeting with Peter Obi, the former Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, marking their first public interaction since the 2023 election. The meeting, described as a "normal friendly meeting," has sparked speculation about a potential alliance leading up to the 2027 general elections.

While Atiku hinted at the possibility of a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party, he emphasized that the party members would ultimately decide his fate in the upcoming elections. He dismissed concerns about the choice of presidential candidate hindering merger discussions, stating that it would not be an issue.

In response to inquiries about his continued involvement in politics, Atiku affirmed his commitment to making Nigeria a better place and addressing the challenges facing the country. He asserted that age should not be a barrier to political participation and expressed readiness to support the aspirations of the younger generation.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi's recent meetings with Atiku and other PDP leaders, including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, have fueled speculation about a potential coalition for the 2027 elections. Obi, who was a PDP member until 2022 when he left to pursue his presidential ambitions with the Labour Party, has been actively engaging with political stakeholders to explore possible alliances.

Analysts have pointed out that a combined effort between Atiku and Obi in the 2023 election could have posed a significant challenge to the eventual winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, internal conflicts within the PDP and Obi's departure from the party may have contributed to Atiku's loss.

As political dynamics continue to evolve, observers are closely watching for further developments and alliances leading up to the 2027 elections. The interactions between Atiku, Obi, and other political figures signal a potential realignment within Nigeria's political landscape, with implications for the future of the country's democracy.
