Police PRO Declares Bribery a Taboo, Emphasizes Integrity in Force

On Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made a strong declaration against bribery, emphasizing that accepting bribes is a serious taboo for him. Adejobi, who is a prince born to the late Oba Moses Adejobi, the Olowu of Orile-Owu in Osun State, stated that his royal heritage and personal principles guide his stance.

Responding to a question from a user on the social media platform X.com, Adejobi made it clear that he has never taken a bribe. The user, tweeting as #ValentineKruz14, had directly asked, "Have you taken a bribe before?" Adejobi, using his handle #Princemoye1, replied, “No. It’s taboo for a royal prince to take a bribe. Taking a bribe definitely makes someone somewhere cry for many reasons, and it’s ungodly to do so.”

Adejobi expanded on his response by stating that engaging in bribery goes against his personal and professional ethics. He believes that life's main purpose is to put smiles on people's faces, which he considers both godly and rewarding. "Your main purpose in life is to put smiles on people’s faces. It’s Godly and rewarding. It’s my personal principle and a call to duty," he explained.

As a senior officer in the Nigeria Police Force, Adejobi preaches this principle to his colleagues, urging them to maintain integrity and dedication in their duties. He expressed a strong hope that everyone in the force could remain steadfast and purposeful in their lives. “I preach this to my colleagues and many others always. May we have the grace to remain steadfast and purposeful in life,” he said.

This statement from Adejobi came amidst ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to crack down on corruption and maintain professional standards. Recently, the force dismissed Inspector Adabo Mohammed, who was implicated in a criminal conspiracy and armed robbery. Mohammed, along with five others, was accused of stealing N29.8 million from a victim in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory.

Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has been vocal about his administration’s commitment to upholding integrity within the force. Adejobi reiterated this commitment, highlighting the IGP’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of indiscipline. In a statement, he conveyed the IGP’s resolve to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.

“In a decisive move to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has emphasized his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of indiscipline. He stressed that the mandate of the police is to serve and protect with honour and integrity, and as such all breaches of the core values of the NPF will be met with decisive action to maintain public trust and ensure justice,” Adejobi stated.

This incident with Inspector Mohammed is part of a broader effort by the police force to root out corruption and ensure that all officers adhere to the highest ethical standards. The dismissal of Mohammed follows another recent case in December 2023, where two special constabularies were dismissed for attempting to extort a Dutch power bike cyclist. The dismissal of Jimoh Lukmon and Kareem Fatai was announced by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Hamzat Adebola, at the police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

These constabularies were caught in a viral video soliciting money from the Dutch tourist, which led to their immediate dismissal. This incident highlighted the ongoing issues of corruption within the force and the steps being taken to address them. Adejobi and other senior officials have been working tirelessly to ensure that such behavior is not tolerated and that all officers understand the importance of integrity in their roles.

Adejobi’s personal declaration against bribery and his commitment to integrity reflect a broader cultural shift within the Nigeria Police Force. The efforts by senior officials like Adejobi and the strict policies implemented by IGP Egbetokun aim to restore public trust and ensure that the police serve the public with honor and integrity. The dismissal of corrupt officers and the promotion of ethical behavior are crucial steps in this direction.

By promoting a culture of integrity and accountability, the Nigeria Police Force hopes to rebuild its reputation and strengthen its relationship with the public. Adejobi’s statements and the recent actions taken against corrupt officers underscore the force’s dedication to this mission.

In conclusion, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi’s firm stance against bribery, grounded in his royal heritage and personal ethics, sets a powerful example for the Nigeria Police Force. His commitment to putting smiles on people's faces and maintaining integrity aligns with the broader efforts by the force to uphold professional standards and ensure justice. As the force continues to crack down on corruption, the hope is that public trust will be restored and the police will serve the community with the honor and integrity that is expected of them.
