South-West Farmers and Herdsmen Forge Peace Pact to Ensure Food Security

In a significant move towards fostering harmony and stability in the South-West region of Nigeria, farmers and herdsmen have come together to sign a peace pact aimed at ending the longstanding conflicts between their communities. The agreement, signed by Segun Dasaolu, Coordinator of the Commodities Farmers Organisation in the South-West, and Othman Ngelzarma, President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, marks a pivotal moment in resolving tensions and promoting food security.

The historic signing took place during the Commodities Farmers Organisation Summit, themed 'Sustainable Food Production in South-West Nigeria: The Way Forward,' held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Addressing the gathering, Dasaolu emphasized the summit's focus on facilitating the return of South-West farmers to their lands and enhancing food security nationwide. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between farmers and herders in addressing shared challenges, urging government support in policy formulation and assistance.

Key elements of the peace pact include the identification of genuine herders in the South-West and the collection of data to better understand the dynamics of farming and herding in the region. Ngelzarma echoed Dasaolu's sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of peace in driving agricultural productivity and combating insecurity, particularly kidnapping.

The event witnessed the presence of notable figures such as Chief Rashidi Ladoja, former Governor of Oyo State, and Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja General and daughter of President Bola Tinubu, underscoring the significance of the peace initiative.

The signing of this peace pact signifies a collaborative effort towards sustainable coexistence and agricultural development, setting a positive precedent for conflict resolution and promoting a thriving agricultural sector in Nigeria.
