As the farming season commences, Benue State is gripped by escalating violence perpetrated by suspected Fulani herdsmen, leaving farming communities in disarray.
In the past week alone, armed militia have carried out deadly attacks on three communities in Gwer West Local Government Area, claiming the lives of at least 28 individuals, including six security operatives. The attacks occurred shortly after the mass burial of 17 victims in Gwer East Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that similar atrocities have unfolded across various localities, with bandits targeting nine communities in Apa Local Government Area, leaving homes ablaze and casualties mounting. Lawmaker Abu Umoru expressed grave concern, noting the widespread displacement and destruction wrought upon his constituents.
Tragically, the onslaught has spared few. In Ukum Local Government Area, the Gbagir community fell victim to a brutal invasion, resulting in the loss of an entire family and numerous others. Survivors recount scenes of horror, with armed assailants descending upon unsuspecting villagers during evening hours.
The relentless onslaught extends to Agatu and Otukpo Local Government Areas, where communities like Ogboju and Onipi have suffered devastating losses. Herders, armed with weapons, lay waste to farmlands, destroying crops and livelihoods in their wake. In Olakpoga community, gunmen claimed yet another life, leaving a trail of grief and fear in their wake.
As the violence persists, local authorities grapple with the crisis, endeavoring to safeguard vulnerable communities. Alfred Omakwu, caretaker chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, underscores the urgency of protective measures, emphasizing the imperative of securing farmlands amidst the planting season.
Farmers, once the backbone of the region's economy, now find themselves at the mercy of relentless attacks. Amodu Igoche and Aboje Edache, among others, voice their anguish and frustration, decrying the wanton destruction of their crops and livelihoods.
Amidst the chaos, calls for intervention grow louder. Urgent action is needed to stem the tide of violence and restore peace to the embattled region, allowing farmers to reclaim their lands and rebuild their shattered lives.
