"Lagos Supermarket Showdown: Price Transparency or Shutdown - Consumers' Victory?"

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a directive to all supermarkets and grocery stores operating within Lagos State, mandating them to prominently display prices on all their products. Failure to adhere to this directive could result in fines or even the closure of the non-compliant stores. This directive comes as part of LASCOPA's efforts to ensure transparency in consumer transactions and to safeguard consumers from potential price exploitation.

In a statement released on the official website of the Lagos State Government, LASCOPA emphasized the importance of price transparency in protecting consumer rights. According to the statement, the absence of clearly displayed price tags can lead to misunderstandings and inconvenience for consumers during the point of sale.

Afolabi Solebo, the General Manager of LASCOPA, highlighted that the failure to display price tags is not only a violation of consumer rights but also contravenes the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law. He emphasized that without clear price tags, consumers are unable to compare prices or make informed decisions about their purchases. This lack of transparency goes against the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, which mandates the clear display of prices for goods and services.

Solebo further stated that LASCOPA will enforce strict penalties in accordance with consumer protection laws against supermarkets and grocery stores found to be in violation of the directive. This includes the imposition of fines and potential closure of the erring establishments. He urged consumers to report any instances of non-compliance to LASCOPA, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in ensuring consumer protection and fair business practices.

The directive from LASCOPA follows recent enforcement actions by regulatory authorities in other parts of the country. In February, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) sealed a popular supermarket in the Garki area of Abuja, Sahad Store, for its lack of transparency in pricing practices.

In light of these developments, consumers are encouraged to be vigilant and assert their rights by demanding transparent pricing practices from retailers. This not only promotes fair business conduct but also contributes to a more conducive and trustworthy consumer environment.
