NLC Slams Tinubu Government for Interfering in Union Affairs, Demands End to Labour Party Destabilization

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration for allegedly interfering in the leadership tenure of union officials. NLC spokesman Benson Upah accused the government of attempting to impose a two-year term limit on labour leaders, a move he said would violate both Labour Law and International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions. He argued that if the government insists on such a tenure limit, it should apply equally to all public offices, including the presidency.

In addition to these concerns, Upah condemned the government's efforts to destabilize the Labour Party and opposition groups, calling for an end to these actions. He also demanded an apology from the police for their raid on the NLC headquarters, which he described as unwarranted and poorly justified. The police, according to Upah, offered inconsistent explanations, claiming the raid targeted a criminal suspect on a lower floor, despite police presence on higher levels of the building.

Upah further criticized the government for its economic policies, which he said have exacerbated hardship across the country. He called for the release of detained protesters, including Opalua Eleojo, an executive member of the Nigeria Union Electricity Employee (NUEE). The NLC warned that it might resort to industrial action or other measures to express its dissatisfaction if these issues remain unaddressed.
