Organized Labour Denies Reaching Agreement with F.G. on Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have refuted claims that they reached an agreement with the federal government on a new minimum wage. This follows President Bola Tinubu's announcement that an executive bill with an agreed-upon minimum wage would be sent to the National Assembly for formalization.

According to Prince Adewale Adeyanju, acting vice president of the NLC, the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage had not reached a consensus on a base figure or other components by the end of negotiations on June 7. The NLC maintains its demand for a minimum wage of N250,000, which it considers a significant concession.

The labour unions expressed surprise at the president's statement, suggesting that he may have been misinformed about the agreement. The NLC and TUC await further negotiations to resolve the minimum wage issue.
