Acute food insecurity may hit Nigeria, 17 others - UN report

The United Nations has warned that acute food insecurity is projected to worsen in 18 countries, including Nigeria. The report highlights the need for immediate assistance to prevent famine in Gaza and Sudan, and worsening hunger crises in Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan.

The report also notes that the Central African Republic, Lebanon, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zambia have joined the list of hunger hotspots, where acute food insecurity is likely to deteriorate further.

Conflict, climate extremes, and economic shocks are persistently pushing vulnerable households into food crises, and the report warns that 2023 could potentially see a decrease in humanitarian funding.

The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and WFP Executive Director, Cindy McCain, have called for proactive anticipatory approaches to prevent food crises, rather than responding after they occur.

The report highlights the need for urgent action to address food insecurity, and the importance of learning from past experiences, such as the famine in Somalia in 2011.
