In a brazen and daring attack, bandits have abducted at least 20 residents of Dawaki, a community near Kubwa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, around 7:30 pm, when the armed men, numbering about 50, invaded the community and broke into several houses on Frank Opara Street.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits, who were armed with guns and other weapons, moved from house to house, kidnapping residents and taking them away to an unknown destination. The Chairman of Dawaki Rock Heaven Community, Tunde Abdulrahim, confirmed the incident and said that the community was still in shock over the attack.
The FCT Police Command has confirmed the incident and said that the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, led a team of policemen to the scene and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle. According to the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the police, in synergy with local hunters, advanced on the assailants, tactically ambushing them at Ushafa Hill via Bwari and Shishipe Hills via Mpape.
The gun battle was intense, and the hoodlums were forced to scamper to safety with various degrees of bullet injuries. Some of the victims were rescued, but others are still missing. The police said that one of the rescued victims is still in the hospital receiving medical attention.
The attack on Dawaki community is the latest in a series of kidnappings and bandit attacks in the FCT. Just last week, five people were abducted from Shagari Quarters, Dei-Dei, in the FCT. The victims included a senior customs officer's wife, three of his children, and a younger brother.
The bandits have created a base behind Zuma Rock in the Chachi community near Dakawa in neighbouring Niger State, which leads to some forests around Bwari. The traditional ruler of Dakwa, Dr Alhassan Musa Babachukuri, lamented that the bandits have been using the base to launch attacks on communities in the FCT.
The FCT Police Command has assured residents of the territory that it is doing everything possible to ensure their safety and security. The command has also urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities to the police.
The attack on Dawaki community has raised concerns about the security situation in the FCT. Residents are calling on the government to do more to protect them from bandits and other criminals. The incident has also highlighted the need for community policing and for residents to work together with the police to prevent crimes.
In conclusion, the attack on Dawaki community is a sad reminder of the security challenges facing the FCT. The police and other security agencies must do more to protect residents and prevent such incidents from occurring. Residents must also be vigilant and work together to prevent crimes.
