Violent Attack Mars Edo APC Meeting, Hospitalizing Woman Leader and Husband

A scheduled meeting aimed at installing former federal lawmaker Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma as the 'Apex Leader' of the All Progressives Congress in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Edo State, descended into chaos as suspected hoodlums launched a violent assault on attendees.

The incident, which occurred on Dumez Road in Benin, the state capital, saw the assailants inflict injuries on those present, leaving the woman leader of the local government and her husband hospitalized. Additionally, vehicles and chairs were damaged, and drinks and other items were stolen from the venue.

Speaking to reporters following the attack, Agbonayinma revealed that he had been contacted by the APC local government chairman, Sunny Ogbewe, who informed him of the leaders of Ikpoba-Okha's intention to engage in discussions regarding the party's future in the area. However, the meeting quickly turned violent, with individuals associated with Agbonayinma allegedly leading the onslaught.

Agbonayinma expressed his dismay over the incident, condemning the resort to violence in political matters. He highlighted the appeals from local government residents for him to assume a leadership position, despite his reservations due to personal challenges, including the recent loss of his son.

The situation escalated further as the attackers reportedly made off with a generator set intended to power equipment for the meeting. Despite the disruption, security was later reinforced at the venue, allowing Agbonayinma to address the gathering. He vowed that those responsible for the attack would face consequences for their actions.

Acknowledging the honor bestowed upon him by the APC members, Agbonayinma assured attendees that he would not take their trust for granted. He pledged to consult widely before making decisions and urged party members to show respect for leadership at all levels.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with participants at the meeting calling for severe sanctions against the perpetrators to deter future acts of violence in political settings.
