Gov. Makinde Vows to Prevent Crisis over Olubadan Stool

Governor Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has firmly asserted his commitment to maintaining peace and preventing any potential crisis surrounding the vacant Olubadan stool. The declaration comes in the wake of the passing of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of unity and warned against any actions or rhetoric that could fuel division among the populace. The Olubadan stool, a revered traditional institution in Ibadan, is currently vacant, prompting speculation and concerns regarding the succession process.

Reports indicate a simmering tension among the kingmakers who form part of the Olubadan-In-Council, raising apprehensions about a potential power struggle over the selection of the next Olubadan.

During a courtesy visit to his Ikolaba residence, Governor Makinde addressed the issue, stressing that the nomination process for the new Olubadan has not yet taken place. He reiterated that until such nominations are made and brought before him, there should be no cause for divisive discourse or actions.

"Some people have kept talking about the Ibadan Chieftaincy System, saying it has got issues and all of that. But I said the Obas-in-Council are yet to make their nomination. When they make it, it will come to me and I will either say yes or no. But that has not happened. So, why are people focusing on things that are capable of dividing us?" Governor Makinde stated.

Governor Makinde further urged individuals whose inclinations lean towards sowing seeds of discord to redirect their efforts towards fostering unity and cohesion within the community. He emphasized the need for collective focus on matters that promote harmony and progress, rather than divisive tendencies that could undermine the fabric of societal unity.

As the state awaits the resolution of the succession process for the Olubadan stool, Governor Makinde's unequivocal stance serves as a reassurance of his administration's commitment to preserving peace and stability in Oyo State amidst any challenges that may arise.
