"Legal Crisi Looms: Nnamdi Kanu's Lawyers Threaten Court Boycott Over Alleged Injustice"

Nnamdi Kanu's legal team, representing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a stern warning, suggesting a potential boycott of court proceedings. This action stems from their assertion of perceived injustices against their client. Kanu, who faces charges of treason felony and terrorism, has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.

The legal team's concerns primarily revolve around what they perceive as a lack of respect for Kanu's right to a fair trial by the DSS. Despite Kanu's application for bail on health grounds and to adequately prepare for trial, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja rejected his plea. Instead, Justice Nyako assured an accelerated hearing, with Kanu's trial scheduled to commence on April 17, 2024.

However, Kanu's legal representatives, led by Alloy Ejimakor, have encountered significant challenges in preparing their client for trial. During a press conference in Abuja on April 9, 2024, Ejimakor accused the DSS of obstructing their access to Kanu and confiscating every legal document intended for his preparation.

This sentiment was reiterated during another press briefing, where Ejimakor expressed their intention to withdraw from the trial should the DSS persist in impeding their efforts. He emphasized that such actions would not only deprive Kanu of his right to a fair trial but would also compel the legal team to disengage from a process they perceive as unjust.

Despite attempts to obtain a response from the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, no official statement was forthcoming at the time of reporting.

The looming prospect of a boycott underscores the ongoing legal saga surrounding Kanu's case and the contentious issues surrounding his detention and subsequent trial.
