Late on Friday night, the explosion rocked the military base located approximately 50km south of Baghdad. PMF's chief of staff, Abdul Aziz al-Mohammedawi, personally visited the site to assess the situation and gather information from investigative committees.
While the PMF firmly labels the incident as an attack, the Iraqi army is conducting its own investigation into the matter. The army has clarified that there were no warplanes in the vicinity at the time of the explosion, adding that a technical committee has been tasked with determining the cause of the blast and subsequent fire.
According to the Iraqi military's statement, their air defense command confirmed through technical analysis and radar detection that there were no drones or fighter jets present in the airspace of Babil Province before or during the explosion.
As investigations continue, the incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by military installations in Iraq and the need for heightened vigilance to safeguard against such attacks.
