"Private Cars Transform Inter-State Travel Amid Economic Hardship in Nigeria"

There seems to be no end to the continuous degradation of the living standards of Nigerians. With the increasing rise in the cost of goods and services, Nigerians are putting up a relentless struggle for survival, despite the limitations on their purchasing power.

The traditional image of individual families embarking on journeys in private cars has evolved. Nowadays, these cars are increasingly occupied by passengers traveling on inter-state journeys. Investigation reveals that these cars are often owned by individuals who register them under transportation companies for business purposes. Some have turned to this option as a means of survival after losing their jobs, while others see it as a lucrative side hustle.

Mr. David Kareem, an interstate driver, explains that transport companies have embraced this trend, allowing private car owners to register their vehicles under the company for public business purposes. This shift has been partly influenced by the economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which have led to a decline in interstate travel.

Mr. Efosa Ighiadolor, another interstate bus driver, echoes these sentiments, noting the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the transportation business. He highlights the struggle to fill up vehicles with passengers due to reduced demand, leading some companies to opt for smaller vehicles like Siennas and Toyota Jeeps to minimize losses.

Passengers, too, have adjusted their preferences in response to these changes. Mrs. Jane Udofia, a passenger traveling from Auchi to Lagos, shares her experience of opting for cars over mini buses due to time constraints and the convenience offered by smaller vehicles.

Overall, the transportation landscape in Nigeria is undergoing a significant transformation as private cars increasingly join mini and luxury buses for inter-state journeys. This shift reflects the ongoing economic challenges facing Nigerians and the innovative responses of both transport operators and passengers to adapt to changing circumstances.
