"Beware: NAPTIP Issues Warning on Fake Oil and Gas Job Offers, Unveils Trafficking Scheme"

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) issued a stark warning to the public, cautioning against falling prey to fraudulent job offers purportedly from oil and gas companies. This advisory comes as a response to the alarming emergence of a new tactic employed by suspected human traffickers, who are exploiting the branding of well-known oil and gas firms to deceive individuals.

In a statement released by the Director-General of NAPTIP, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, the agency shed light on this concerning trend, revealing that traffickers are enticing unsuspecting individuals—particularly those aged between 15 and 35 years—with unrealistic promises of lucrative employment opportunities. These deceptive offers, often disguised as positions in gold mining or oil companies, promise monthly salaries as high as $900. However, Waziri-Azi emphasized that such enticing offers are nothing but blatant lies designed to manipulate vulnerable individuals.

According to Adekoye Vincent, the Chief Communications Officer of NAPTIP, victims are typically instructed to provide substantial sums of money—up to N850,000—for purported documentation and logistical expenses associated with securing these fictitious jobs. Upon reaching their destination, victims discover the harsh reality as traffickers seize their money, along with personal belongings such as phones.

The targeted demographic for these exploitative schemes includes both men and women aged between 15 and 35 years. They are often trafficked through various routes, including the waterways of Ode Jetty in Lagos, with destinations primarily in neighboring West African countries like Benin Republic. Some victims are also transported via land routes.

Waziri-Azi reiterated her appeal to Nigerians to exercise caution, urging individuals not to let desperation cloud their judgment when faced with tempting job offers. She emphasized the importance of asking questions and seeking second opinions before accepting any offers, highlighting the need for vigilance in the face of such deceptive tactics.

Furthermore, the NAPTIP Director-General emphasized that the agency has intensified its efforts through enhanced partnerships, collaborations, diligent prosecutions, and extensive awareness campaigns. These efforts have led to a notable increase in the conviction of human traffickers, underscoring NAPTIP's commitment to combatting human trafficking and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all Nigerians.

In light of the evolving tactics used by traffickers, NAPTIP continues to urge the public to report any suspected cases of human trafficking promptly. By remaining vigilant and informed, individuals can better protect themselves and others from falling victim to these insidious schemes.
