"NAHCON Raises Hajj Fare by N1.9m: Nigerian Pilgrims Face New Financial Hurdle"

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has increased the fare for this year’s pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia by N1,918,032.91, setting a deadline of March 28, 2024.

The Commission attributed the increase to the ongoing forex crisis in Nigeria. Initially, the fare for this year’s Hajj was set at N4.9 million, but due to circumstances beyond its control, NAHCON announced the additional amount.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Farima Sanda Usara, NAHCON expressed appreciation for the understanding and concern shown by stakeholders amid the dilemma. The Commission emphasized the strict timeline for Hajj preparations and the necessity to adhere to the schedule outlined by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

NAHCON highlighted the challenges posed by delayed remittances of Hajj fare and the implications of forex rate harmonization, resulting in unexpected cost increases for Nigerian pilgrims.

Despite efforts to mitigate the situation, including appeals for intervention from state governments and affluent individuals, the Commission found it necessary to adjust the fare.

With the current exchange rate, each pilgrim is now required to pay a balance of N1,918,032.91. NAHCON urged intending pilgrims to settle the balance by March 28, 2024, as the system would be closed thereafter.

Affected pilgrims were advised to verify their status with their respective state pilgrims boards. The Commission assured stakeholders of its commitment to ensuring the success of the forthcoming Hajj exercise despite the challenges encountered.

NAHCON's decision reflects the complexities of managing pilgrimage logistics amidst economic uncertainties, underscoring the need for effective coordination and support from all stakeholders involved.
