Lawmakers Put Cars Above Constituency Needs,” Critics Slam Kaduna Assembly’s N5.3bn Vehicle, Housing Budget

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has come under fire after allocating N5.3 billion for lawmakers’ vehicles and official residences—an amount that surpasses funds set aside for constituency projects.

Budget documents reviewed by reporters show that another N1.5 billion was earmarked for the construction of new residences for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Critics say the spending priorities expose a disconnect between the legislature and citizens struggling with economic hardship.

“It is unacceptable that lawmakers are prioritising luxury vehicles and mansions for themselves while communities lack basic amenities,” a civil society activist in Kaduna told reporters.

The development has sparked backlash on social media, with many residents accusing the Assembly of self-serving governance at a time when the state faces growing insecurity, poverty, and infrastructure decay.

As of press time, Assembly leaders had yet to issue a formal response to the criticism.
