Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, have expressed their views on the planned national protests against hardship in Nigeria, set to begin on August 1st.
After a breakfast meeting at Otti’s country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, both leaders emphasized the importance of lawful and peaceful demonstrations.
Governor Otti voiced concerns about potential hijacking of the protests by unpatriotic elements, warning that such actions could exacerbate the problems rather than address them. "We have seen protests hijacked. My fears are that this one will also be hijacked," Otti said. He urged the people of Abia to avoid joining the protests, suggesting alternative methods of expressing dissent, such as writing letters or making calls to register their displeasure with government actions.
Otti acknowledged the prevailing hunger and economic difficulties, attributing them to long-standing governance issues. He stressed the need for Nigeria to shift towards a productive economy and reduce dependency on imports.
On the other hand, Peter Obi supported the protests, citing hunger and hopelessness among Nigerians as the primary drivers. He urged protesters to act within the law and in a civil manner, allowing the nation to demonstrate its adherence to legal norms. "The sponsors of protest are very simple, it is hunger, it is hopelessness among the youths," Obi stated, advocating for the government to engage with protesters and address their grievances through dialogue.
Obi also called on security agencies to manage the protests lawfully, emphasizing the need for constructive engagement to find solutions to the pressing issues faced by Nigerians.
