FCT Police Rescue Kidnap Victim After 30-Minute Gun Battle

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says it has rescued a kidnap victim following a fierce 30-minute exchange of gunfire with kidnappers in the Guzape area of Abuja.

The operation, carried out between September 15 and 18 as part of wider anti-kidnapping raids, involved multiple security formations including the Nigerian Army, DSS operatives, local hunters, and vigilante groups.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, described the confrontation as a “life-threatening battle,” confirming that three suspected kidnappers were neutralised during the raid.

He disclosed that the gang had earlier attacked on September 15, leaving two vigilante members injured, one of whom later died at the National Hospital, Abuja. The kidnappers also attempted to abduct two young women, but swift police intervention secured their release.

Acting on intelligence, security operatives traced the gang to a hideout in Zinda Forest, near the Nigerian Army Estate in Kurudu, on September 18. The suspects opened fire, but were overpowered after sustained resistance.

Investigations revealed that the gang’s leader had been linked to a string of kidnappings across Karu, Guzape, Kpobi, Kurudu, and parts of Nasarawa State. Police also foiled an attempted abduction at the Federal Housing Estate, Karu, the same day.

Recovered items from the scene included two AK-49 rifles, two magazines with seven rounds of live ammunition, mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, animal horns, lighters, and ₦10,000 cash.

In a separate development, the FCT Anti-Narcotics Unit arrested 11 suspected drug dealers and seized 68 bags of substances believed to be cannabis and other narcotics during coordinated raids.

CP Adewale assured residents that proactive patrols and targeted operations will continue across identified hotspots and border communities to curb kidnappings and drug-related crimes.
