BREAKING: Dangote, NUPENG Reach Truce, Suspend Nationwide Strike

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its nationwide strike after reaching an agreement with the Dangote Group, a move that averts a potential fuel supply crisis across Nigeria.

The resolution followed a reconvened meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, where government officials and key industry stakeholders intervened to end the standoff.

NUPENG had on Monday directed its members to halt operations in protest against what it described as “anti-union practices” at the Dangote Refinery, particularly alleged restrictions on workers’ rights to unionise. The action immediately disrupted loading activities at major depots, sparking fears of imminent fuel scarcity.

Union President, Williams Akporeha, had earlier insisted the strike was a response to “anti-worker policies” that threatened labour rights in the oil and gas sector. The Dangote Group, however, maintained that the industrial action would not result in nationwide shortages.

With the new agreement, NUPENG has instructed its members to resume work without delay, restoring operations across depots and refineries.

The truce marks the end of a tense industrial dispute that had already gained the backing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Analysts say the suspension provides temporary relief for the downstream sector and shields the economy from what could have been a severe supply disruption.
