United Kingdom has awarded 85 outstanding Nigerian students the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK in 2025, strengthening educational and diplomatic ties between both countries.
This year, 39 scholars and one fellow received the Chevening scholarships, while 45 scholars were awarded the Commonwealth scholarships. A pre-departure ceremony was held in Abuja on Wednesday for recipients from the Federal Capital Territory and nearby states, while a similar event is scheduled for Lagos in September.
Speaking at the Abuja reception, Gill Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner, congratulated the beneficiaries for excelling in the highly competitive selection process.
Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council Nigeria, urged the scholars to embrace the responsibility that comes with the award.
Among the beneficiaries, Tijjanni Mukaddas, a Chevening fellow headed to the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies, expressed gratitude.
Similarly, Cynthia Okoli, a Commonwealth scholar who will study at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), emphasized the opportunities for global collaboration.
Nigeria currently boasts a strong alumni base of over 4,500 scholars—including 3,000 Commonwealth and 1,500 Chevening alumni—who continue to play influential roles in the country’s development.
