The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, has warned that any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians in Gaza would be both “unfeasible and incomprehensible” under the enclave’s dire humanitarian conditions.
“It is impossible that a mass evacuation of Gaza could ever be done in a way that is safe and dignified under the current conditions,” Spoljaric said in a statement on Saturday, as Israel intensified its military operations across the besieged territory.
Her remarks come amid growing international concern over Israel’s ongoing campaign, which rights groups and humanitarian organisations say has pushed Gaza’s 2.3 million people to the brink of starvation, illness, and homelessness.
The Israeli military has repeatedly ordered civilians to move south, but Spoljaric noted that many Palestinians are too weak, sick, or injured to flee. Severe shortages of food, medicine, and shelter mean there is no capacity to absorb further displacement, she added.
She said Any evacuation not only risks mass suffering but also violates the basic principles of international humanitarian law, underscoring Israel’s obligation to ensure access to food, safety, and shelter for civilians under its orders.
Despite the worsening humanitarian crisis, the Israeli military said on Friday it would continue to support humanitarian efforts alongside ongoing manoeuvring and offensive operations against terrorist organisations in the Gaza Strip to protect the state of Israel.
According to health officials in Gaza, more than 63,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — have been killed since the start of Israel’s assault.
