A coalition meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by former Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, was violently disrupted on Saturday when suspected government-backed thugs stormed the venue, leaving several people injured and vehicles damaged.
The attack took place at the Conference Hall of NUT Endwell in Magadishu Layout, Kaduna town, where the coalition’s transitional leadership meeting was being held. Witnesses said the hoodlums, allegedly mobilised by state officials, destroyed windscreens of cars, including El-Rufai’s, and smashed windows of the conference hall.

Some members of the coalition sustained serious injuries. Videos and photos obtained showed the chaos as the thugs invaded, despite the presence of armed policemen reportedly deployed earlier by the government to block the gathering.

According to sources, the state government had earlier pressured event centres across Kaduna to cancel bookings made by the opposition coalition, forcing the organisers to settle on the NUT Endwell hall.
One source alleged that the hoodlums were organised by “a Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties known as Hon. Babaji” to frustrate the meeting.
