Tension gripped Abraka community in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday after soldiers pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, popularly called “yahoo boys,” allegedly shot and killed a pregnant woman.
Eyewitnesses explain that the troops, attached to Operation Delta Sweep, had attempted to flag down a vehicle carrying the suspects. When the occupants refused to stop and sped off, the soldiers gave chase, firing sporadically.
The tragedy sparked an angry protest by indigenes, residents, and students in the area, who blocked roads and condemned the soldiers’ action. The woman’s body was later removed as security reinforcements moved in to quell the unrest.
Local sources said the victim was not connected to the chase and was simply caught in the crossfire. Her death has reignited debates about military excesses in civilian communities, particularly in the Niger Delta where operations against criminal gangs are frequent.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
