Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has demanded a public apology from Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), over alleged harassment of NTA transport reporter and former NAWOJ president, Ladi Bala.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 27 while Bala was covering the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment. Eyewitnesses said Opeifa interrupted her live broadcast, verbally assaulted her with insults including “stupid” and “foolish woman,” and ordered security operatives to eject her from the scene.
He was also accused of threatening to petition the Presidency and NTA management to have her removed, and allegedly vowed she would not cover NRC activities again. NUJ said Opeifa further insulted Grace Ike, chairperson of the FCT Council, when she intervened.
In a statement on Friday signed by Secretary Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ described Opeifa’s conduct as “a violation of press freedom, women’s dignity, and a grave affront to democracy.” The council demanded an immediate public apology and urged the NRC to take steps to prevent a recurrence.
Stated that the union will pursue all necessary channels to ensure accountability and safeguard journalists’ rights,
