Former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has died at the age of 69 in Abuja.
Family sources confirmed that Arase passed away on Sunday at Cedar Crest Hospital, the nation’s capital. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, also verified the development, saying an official police statement would be issued soon.
Born on June 21, 1956, in Edo State, Arase joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1981 after studying Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University. He later earned a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.
Arase rose through the ranks to become Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police in 2015, serving until his retirement in 2016. He was later appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in January 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held until June 2024.
Throughout his career, he was known for championing police welfare and reforms, introducing initiatives such as the Intelligence Response Team, Complaint Response Unit, and Safer Highway Patrols. He also played a key role in election security and neutrality.
