FG Denies Signing Agreement With ASUU, Says Document Only a Draft

The Federal Government has dismissed claims of a binding agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that the document circulating publicly is only a draft.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the clarification on Thursday in Abuja while reacting to ASUU’s ongoing nationwide protests. He stressed that President Bola Tinubu had directed the ministry to find a sustainable solution to the long-standing disputes with the union.

Alausa said government was not interested in “bogus or unsustainable agreements,” but in accords that are practical, actionable, and constitutionally backed. He assured that ASUU’s demonstrations would not escalate into strikes, as talks between both parties remain active.

He disclosed that a high-level meeting involving the Ministers of Education, Labour, and Justice, as well as heads of key agencies including the National Universities Commission and Budget Office, had reviewed ASUU’s proposals line by line. A technical team will fine-tune the draft before submission to the Yayale Ahmed-led renegotiation committee.

“We want an agreement where every component is feasible. Nigerians can be assured this government will keep schools open and ensure our children remain in classrooms,” Alausa said, adding that the Ministry of Justice will now be fully involved to ensure legal compliance.
