Protests: PDP Condemns Tinubu’s Speech as Inadequate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's recent address to the nation, labeling it as diversionary and failing to tackle the core issues that have led to widespread protests. In a statement by PDP spokesperson Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party expressed disappointment in the speech, which it deemed insufficient in addressing the hardships and demands of Nigerian citizens.

The PDP accused President Tinubu and his administration of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians, highlighting that the speech lacked concrete measures to alleviate the economic suffering that has triggered the ongoing protests. The statement underscored the PDP’s belief that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government has shown a lack of empathy and understanding of the country's dire situation.

Ologunagba noted that despite the protests and public outcry, Tinubu's speech did not propose immediate actions to reduce the price of petroleum products, halt the depreciation of the Naira, or address the urgent need for food provision for starving citizens.

The PDP also criticized the absence of any mention of an investigation into the reported brutal killings of unarmed protesters by security operatives. The party emphasized that good governance should prioritize the protection, security, and welfare of its citizens, lamenting the APC’s apparent disregard for these principles.

Instead of addressing these critical issues, the PDP argued, President Tinubu's speech was filled with self-praise and claims of achievements that do not resonate with the reality faced by millions of Nigerians. This approach, according to the PDP, only serves to reinforce the perception that the APC government is disconnected from the suffering of the people.

The PDP asserted that the APC administration is overwhelmed by the multitude of problems stemming from its anti-people policies, which have exacerbated economic hardships and stifled development. The party called on the government to admit its failures and be open to alternative solutions and suggestions from various stakeholders.

Additionally, the party called for a reduction in the size of the government and cuts in luxury expenditures to free up resources for these urgent interventions.

The PDP’s condemnation of President Tinubu’s speech reflects the growing frustration among Nigerians over the current administration’s handling of the economic crisis and governance issues. As protests continue, the opposition party’s demands highlight the need for more responsive and people-centric policies to address the nation's pressing challenges.
