In a tense standoff, military personnel and officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) clashed over the Federal Government's attempt to close the busy Adeniji to Falomo Road in Lagos. The dispute arose as the Federal Controller of Works, Mrs. Olukorede Keisha, enlisted military support to enforce the road's closure for rehabilitation purposes without notifying the state authorities in advance.
The ongoing clash has sparked concerns over the potential disruption to traffic and daily commutes for Lagos residents. LASTMA officials argue that such closures require prior notice and public communication from the Lagos Ministry of Transportation to ensure minimal hardship for motorists.
"If the road is closed without prior announcement, motorists will endure severe hardship," said Omoyeni Oladele, a LASTMA official, highlighting the importance of public awareness in such situations.
An unnamed senior officer at the Lagos Ministry of Works noted that this is not the first time the Federal Controller of Works has employed military personnel in her duties. He emphasized that proper procedures should have been followed to prevent the conflict.
The standoff reportedly began around midnight, with LASTMA personnel calling for reinforcements to prevent the closure. The situation could have escalated into a physical confrontation, but the military personnel exercised restraint, preventing further conflict.
Efforts to reach Mrs. Keisha were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to repeated calls or messages. Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transport, Wale Musa, confirmed that efforts are underway to resolve the issue.
"We are working to resolve the matter amicably," Musa said, assuring the public that the Lagos authorities are addressing the conflict to prevent further disruption.
