Anambra Commissioner and Wife Abducted by Gunmen in Kogi State; Aide Fatally Shot

August 16, 2024 (THEWILL) – In a shocking and tragic development, Patrick Aghamba, the Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development, and his wife were abducted by heavily armed gunmen in Kogi State. The abduction, which took place on their journey to a wedding ceremony, has left the community in shock and mourning after one of their aides, identified as A.B. Affiah, was fatally shot during the ambush.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening as the commissioner, his wife, and their entourage were traveling to attend the wedding of Adaora Soludo, the daughter of Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. The wedding, scheduled to take place on Saturday, was to be a grand event, bringing together political leaders, family members, and other notable personalities.

The abduction occurred on a stretch of highway in Kogi State, which has become notorious for banditry, kidnapping, and violent crimes in recent years. This highway, often described as a vital link between the southern and northern regions of Nigeria, has witnessed an alarming rise in such criminal activities, making travel dangerous for commuters.

According to initial reports, the group was traveling in a convoy when they were suddenly ambushed by the gunmen. The attackers, who were heavily armed, blocked the road, preventing the vehicles from escaping. They quickly surrounded the commissioner’s car, overpowering the security personnel and other members of the entourage. Amid the chaos and confusion, the assailants opened fire, tragically killing one of Aghamba’s loyal aides, A.B. Affiah, who was traveling with them.

Eyewitnesses have reported that the gunmen appeared to be targeting the commissioner specifically, given how they focused their attack on his vehicle. Once they had subdued the occupants of the car, they forcibly dragged Aghamba and his wife out of the vehicle. The couple was reportedly taken into the forest by the gunmen, while the other members of the entourage were either left behind or fled for their lives.

As of now, the whereabouts of the commissioner and his wife remain unknown, and the gunmen have yet to make contact with the authorities or the family. The security agencies have launched a massive manhunt in the region, involving the local police, vigilante groups, and other security forces, to locate the abducted couple and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The abduction has sparked widespread concern among government officials and the general public. Anambra State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, expressing deep concern over the security situation in Kogi State. He stated that although the crime occurred outside of Anambra State, the Anambra Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, had already escalated the issue to the appropriate authorities in Kogi State. Ikenga reassured the public that the police would extend any necessary assistance to help secure the safe release of the commissioner and his wife.

"We received the distressing information about the abduction of our Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Aghamba, and his wife," Ikenga said. "The matter has been reported, and my Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has taken it up with the relevant authorities. We are doing everything within our power to assist in the rescue operation."

Similarly, the Kogi State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Security operatives, including local police units and vigilante groups, are combing the forests and surrounding areas in a bid to locate the kidnappers and rescue the victims. The police spokesperson in Kogi State assured the public that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring the safe return of the commissioner and his wife.

This incident is yet another grim reminder of the deteriorating security situation on Nigerian highways, particularly in regions like Kogi State, where armed attacks and kidnappings have become a growing menace. The increase in violent crimes, especially along these key travel routes, poses significant challenges to both security agencies and ordinary citizens.

In recent years, many prominent figures, including politicians, businessmen, and even ordinary commuters, have fallen victim to kidnappers and bandits on Nigerian roads. These criminals often use their captives as leverage to demand ransom from the victims' families or the government. In some cases, the abductors have shown little regard for human life, resulting in the deaths of several victims.

The abduction of a high-profile figure like Commissioner Patrick Aghamba has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for enhanced security measures on Nigerian highways. Experts have called for a multi-pronged approach to address the issue, including increased patrols by security forces, better intelligence gathering, and more investment in technology to monitor and secure vulnerable areas.

The news of the abduction has sent shockwaves through the Anambra State government and the community at large. Political leaders, civil society groups, and concerned citizens have expressed their outrage and sadness over the incident. Many have called on the federal government to take more decisive action to combat the rising insecurity in the country.

A spokesperson for the Anambra State government described the abduction as a heinous and senseless act of violence, expressing hope that the commissioner and his wife would be rescued unharmed. "This is a tragic and unfortunate incident that should not be happening in our country," the spokesperson said. "We call on the security agencies to intensify their efforts and ensure the safe return of our commissioner and his wife. We also urge the government to take immediate steps to address the rising security challenges in our nation."

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who was preparing for his daughter’s wedding at the time of the abduction, has reportedly been devastated by the news. The governor, known for his strong stance on security and governance, has yet to make a formal statement, but sources close to him say he is deeply concerned about the safety of his commissioner and his wife. He is said to be working closely with security agencies to ensure a swift resolution to the crisis.

Meanwhile, several civil society groups have condemned the rising wave of kidnappings in Nigeria and urged the government to take more proactive steps to ensure the safety of citizens. "The abduction of Commissioner Aghamba and his wife is just one more example of the escalating insecurity in our country," said a representative of the Coalition Against Insecurity in Nigeria (CAIN). "The government must do more to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. We cannot continue to live in fear."

As the rescue efforts continue, many are praying for the safe return of the victims. The abduction has brought into focus the human toll of insecurity in Nigeria. Families are often left in a state of despair, unsure of the fate of their loved ones, and grappling with the emotional and psychological trauma that comes with such incidents.

The fate of Commissioner Patrick Aghamba and his wife now lies in the hands of the security agencies and the government. Their safe return would be a testament to the resilience and commitment of the Nigerian security forces, while their continued captivity would further highlight the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to address the root causes of insecurity in the country.

For now, the people of Anambra State and Nigeria at large wait with bated breath, hoping that this tragic episode will have a peaceful resolution and that the government will take meaningful steps to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
