40 Ilorin Residents Jailed for 3 Months over Environmental Offences


In a landmark ruling, a Magistrate Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has sentenced 40 individuals to a 3-month jail term each for violating the state's environmental laws. The defendants were found guilty of improper refuse dumping and illegal scavenging, sparking concerns about the growing menace of environmental pollution in the state.

Presiding Magistrate, Saidu Tunde Abdulkareem, handed down the sentence on Friday, emphasizing the need for residents to adhere to environmental regulations. According to the court's ruling, each defendant has the option to pay a fine of N50,000 instead of serving the 3-month jail term.

The conviction is in line with the provisions of Section 5, Subsection 1-4 of the Kwara State Environmental Law, which prohibits improper refuse dumping and illegal scavenging. The law aims to protect the environment and promote public health and safety.
