The Kaduna State House of Assembly has established an ad hoc committee to investigate the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The committee's report, presented during Wednesday's plenary session, revealed that most loans obtained under El-Rufai's administration were not used for their intended purpose, and due process was not followed in some cases.
According to the report, the El-Rufai government took a total of N423 billion in loans, leaving the state with significant liabilities. The committee, chaired by Henry Zacharia, recommended that El-Rufai and other indicted members of his cabinet be investigated and prosecuted by security and anti-corruption agencies for abuse of office, diversion of public funds, money laundering, and plunging Kaduna State into deep debt.
The committee also recommended suspending Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance, Shizer Badda, and the head of the state universal basic education board. Additionally, the committee called for a comprehensive inquiry into several key appointments made by the previous government by competent law enforcement and anti-corruption authorities.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly established the ad hoc committee to review all funds, loans, and contracts given under El-Rufai's administration, which spanned from 2015 to 2023. The report's findings and recommendations have been forwarded to the appropriate authorities for further action.
This development comes as a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in governance. The people of Kaduna State and Nigeria at large are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigations and potential prosecutions.
