Embattled former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has finally been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after spending 27 months in detention. Kyari, who headed the Intelligent Response Team (IRT), was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in February 2022 for alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking ring.
His release was confirmed by Adamu Duza, spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service of the FCT Command, on Friday, May 31, 2024. Duza stated that Kyari met his bail conditions and was released accordingly.
Kyari, along with four other members of the IRT and two suspected drug traffickers, was arraigned on March 7, 2022, in connection with the case. The NDLEA accused Kyari and his team of seizing 25kg of cocaine from traffickers but only turning in 10kg, allegedly keeping the rest for themselves.
Kyari's legal troubles intensified after the United States government implicated him in an internet fraud case involving Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi. While two of the suspects in the drug trafficking case pleaded guilty, Kyari and his team maintained their innocence.
Despite multiple bail applications being denied, Kyari was granted a two-week bail by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 22, 2024, to attend his mother's funeral. As part of his bail conditions, Kyari was required to surrender his international passport to the court.
