Tinubu Offers Heartfelt Condolences to Iran as President Raisi's Helicopters Crash


President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has extended his condolences to the government and people of Iran over the tragic passing of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials in a helicopter crash. The incident occurred on Monday, May 20, 2024, in a mountainous region of Iran.

President Tinubu expressed profound
grief over this disturbing tragedy, describing President Raisi as a leader who was passionately committed to the development of Iran. He commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the continuous peace, stability, and prosperity of the Iranian nation.

Rescue teams had been scouring the area since Sunday afternoon after a helicopter carrying President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials had gone missing. Early Monday, relief workers located the missing helicopter, and state TV confirmed the president's death.

State television described President Raisi as "the servant of the Iranian nation" who "has achieved the highest level of martyrdom whilst serving the people." Mehr news agency also confirmed his passing.

Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has assumed interim duties following President Raisi's death, as the country mourns the loss of its leader.

President Tinubu's condolence message comes as a gesture of solidarity and support to the people of Iran during this difficult time. Nigeria and Iran have enjoyed diplomatic relations since 1972, and this tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the globe.
