Tariff Hike: Court Halts Electricity Tariff Surge Amidst Consumer Uproar

A federal high court in Kano has intervened in the controversy surrounding the proposed electricity tariff hike by issuing an interim order to halt its implementation. The court's decision came in response to concerns raised by consumers and businesses regarding the significant increase in electricity rates for Band A customers in the state.

The court directed Kano Electricity Distribution Plc (KEDCO) to immediately suspend the implementation of the tariff hike, which would have seen rates skyrocket from N76.54/Kwh to N225/Kwh. Additionally, the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was instructed to refrain from taking any further steps related to the tariff hike until a motion on notice filed by the applicants is heard and determined.

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, who presided over the case, emphasized the importance of protecting consumers' rights and ensuring that any changes to electricity tariffs are implemented fairly and transparently. The court's decision to grant the interim order reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders involved.

The applicants, represented by counsel Abubakar Balarabe Mahmud and Yahaya Isa Abdulkareem, presented compelling arguments outlining the adverse effects of the proposed tariff hike on their businesses and livelihoods. Entities such as Supper Sack Limited, BBY Sack Limited, Mama Sannu Industries Limited, Dala Food Nigeria Limited, and the Tofa Textile and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Co limited by guarantee, joined forces to challenge the tariff hike and protect their interests.

In addition to halting the tariff hike implementation, the court order prohibits NERC and KEDCO from intimidating or threatening consumers who refuse to accept the increased tariffs. This provision ensures that consumers are not unduly penalized for exercising their legal rights amidst the ongoing dispute over electricity tariffs.

The court's decision represents a significant victory for consumers and businesses in Kano, providing them with temporary relief from the burden of exorbitant electricity tariffs. As the legal proceedings continue, stakeholders will closely monitor developments and advocate for a fair and equitable resolution to the tariff hike dispute.
