The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting on Monday, June 3rd. The decision comes in response to the federal government's failure to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent hike in the electricity tariff.
The labour unions had previously issued an ultimatum to the federal government, demanding that the negotiations be concluded by May 31st. With the deadline now passed and no resolution in sight, the unions have
decided to take decisive action to press their demands.
The Presidents of NLC and TUC, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo, announced the strike after storming out of a minimum wage tripartite meeting on Friday evening. In an emergency press briefing, they expressed their disappointment with the government's handling of the negotiations and their decision to move forward with the strike.
The unions argue that the current minimum wage is insufficient given the rising cost of living and the recent increase in electricity tariffs. They have called on all workers to join the strike in solidarity and to demand better wages and fair treatment from the government.
This strike is expected to significantly impact various sectors across the country, as workers from different industries join forces to advocate for their rights. The unions have urged the government to return to the negotiation table and address their concerns to avoid prolonged disruption.
