Oba of Benin Takes Firm Action: Suspends Six Officials for False Representation Before Ooni of Ife

In a significant development, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has taken action against six palace functionaries for allegedly misrepresenting the palace before the Ooni of Ife. The suspension, announced by Chief Sam Igbe, Iyase of Benin kingdom, stems from their purported act of presenting themselves as emissaries of the Oba of Benin during an event involving the Ooni of Ife.

The suspended individuals have been identified as Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba (Ogbelaka), Ogbeide Osagie, and Osamudiame Edo. Their suspension comes following the circulation of video clips on social media, wherein they allegedly claimed allegiance to the Ooni and provided inaccurate information about the historical connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife.

Chief Sam Igbe, speaking on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), condemned their actions as sacrilegious and inappropriate, aimed at ridiculing traditional history and bringing disrepute to Benin custom. He urged the public to disregard their accounts and refrain from engaging with them during their suspension.

In an effort to provide accurate information, the statement advises the public to refer to an authoritative book authored by the late Oba Erediauwa, titled "I Remain, Sir, Your Obedient Servant," for a comprehensive account of the historical connection between the two monarchies.

The suspension of these individuals from their roles as traditional functionaries in Benin Kingdom has been enacted by the Benin Traditional Council, under the authority of the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Prescribed Authority over Benin Custom. This action underscores the palace's commitment to upholding tradition and maintaining the integrity of the Benin Royal Dynasty.
