"NSCDC Thwarts Human Trafficking Ring, Rescues 10 Victims in Abuja, Issues Warning Against Illegal Migration Abroad"

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted 10 suspected victims of human trafficking in Abuja. The interception took place at Zuba motor park, following a tip-off received by officers of the FCT Command of the NSCDC. The victims, consisting of nine females and one male, aged between 24 and 34, were reportedly being sponsored for illegal migration abroad.

According to reports, the victims had traveled to Minna, Niger State, to process their international passports as directed by their sponsor. They claimed to hail from Ondo State and had each paid N80,000 to facilitate the procurement of their passports. The intercepted individuals confessed to being promised migration opportunities abroad, particularly to North Africa and Canada, where they were assured of ready-made jobs.

The identity of the sponsor, who allegedly resides in Okitipupa, Ondo State, remains undisclosed. The victims were intercepted upon their return from Minna and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) by the FCT Command of the NSCDC.

Speaking on the incident, the Commandant of the FCT Command, Olusola Odumosu, emphasized the dangers associated with illegal migration abroad. He cautioned against falling prey to promises of better opportunities overseas, highlighting the risks of exploitation and forced labor that often accompany such ventures.

Odumosu urged individuals aspiring to travel abroad to follow legitimate channels and avoid being deceived by false promises. He stressed the importance of exercising caution and discernment when dealing with individuals offering migration opportunities, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety and legality in all endeavors.

The intercepted victims have been handed over to NAPTIP for further investigation and appropriate legal action. The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking and warned against the exploitation and victimization of individuals seeking better prospects abroad.

In light of the incident, the NSCDC called for increased awareness and vigilance to prevent the proliferation of illegal migration and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse. The agency reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the law and safeguarding the welfare of citizens, urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to human trafficking or illegal migration.
