Monthly Sanitation Suspended for Local Elections, Gombe State Prioritizes Poll Preparation

In preparation for the forthcoming local government elections, the Gombe State Government has made the decision to postpone the monthly sanitation exercise, which was originally scheduled for the last Saturday of April. This announcement was made on Friday by Mohammed Fawu, the Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, in the state capital of Gombe.

Fawu emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the surroundings and urged residents not to wait for the designated monthly sanitation day to participate in keeping their environment clean. He clarified, "This is to inform the general public that the instituted monthly environmental sanitation exercise, slated for every last Saturday of the month, has been suspended for April 2024."

The decision to suspend the sanitation exercise for April is directly related to the local government elections set to take place on April 27th, 2024. Fawu explained that the suspension aims to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted voting process. He stated, "It is believed that the suspension of the environmental sanitation exercise for this month will pave the way for a smooth and hitch-free poll come Saturday."

Furthermore, Fawu encouraged residents to take advantage of the suspension to participate actively in the electoral process by casting their votes during the local government council polls.

In alignment with the government's commitment to environmental cleanliness, Auwal Baba-Jada, the Executive Secretary of Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency, revealed plans to enhance waste management infrastructure. He announced the intention to establish approximately 90 additional refuse collection points, with a focus on areas such as Tumfure, Liji, Akko, and along the bypass.

Baba-Jada emphasized the agency's dedication to improving waste collection services, stating, "We have 90 more to construct not only in Tumfure but along Liji, Akko the bypass that will serve as collection points."

The postponement of the monthly sanitation exercise underscores the government's prioritization of facilitating a successful electoral process while maintaining a commitment to environmental cleanliness and public health in Gombe State.
