"Family Intervention Amidst Controversy: Otun Balogun Questions Olubadan-designate's Fitness for Throne"

The Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, voiced concerns over the fitness of Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, asserting that Olakulehin is currently unwell and unfit to ascend the throne. The vacancy of the revered Olubadan stool arose on March 14 following the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, who reigned for two years until his demise at the age of 81.

Addressing reporters at his Sanyo private residence in Ibadan, Oba Ajibola emphasized Olakulehin's ailing health condition, questioning the rush to install him as the Olubadan. He highlighted the absence of direct communication from Olakulehin to himself or the people of Ibadan, underscoring the need for him to be physically present and engaged with the community before assuming the role.

However, a member of the Olakulehin family, speaking anonymously, refuted Oba Ajibola's assertions, emphasizing that there is no legal basis prohibiting Olakulehin from assuming the position. The family member defended Olakulehin's suitability, pointing out that the physical condition of previous Olubadans had not been a hindrance to their reign.

Oba Ajibola dismissed claims of an endorsement of Olakulehin, stating his refusal to partake in any perceived illegality. He called for adherence to due process and urged patience in awaiting Olakulehin's recovery before proceeding with the installation.

The Otun Balogun further criticized the haste in attempting to install Olakulehin, urging for Governor Seyi Makinde's intervention to ensure Olakulehin's medical fitness and ability to engage with the people. He stressed the importance of Olakulehin being able to recognize and communicate with his subjects.

In response to a meeting held at Chief Bode Amoo's residence on Monday, Oba Ajibola reiterated his refusal to participate until the governor intervenes. He expressed skepticism about Olakulehin's condition, citing reports from those who visited him as inconclusive.

The process of nominating Olakulehin as the Olubadan-designate involves a meeting of the kingmakers, ratification of the choice, and approval by the Oyo State Governor. Oba Ajibola stands as the next in line after Olakulehin on the Balogun line.

Efforts to reach Sumbo Owolabi, Olakulehin's son, were unsuccessful. Oba Ajibola and Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, were absent from the recent meeting, with Ajibade previously expressing reservations about Olakulehin's fitness for the role.

Section 10(2) of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State 1957 outlines criteria for a recognized chieftaincy title, stipulating that serious physical infirmity disqualifies a candidate. Oba Ajibola emphasized the need for Olakulehin to fulfill these criteria before assuming the throne.

The situation remains unresolved pending further intervention and clarification from Governor Makinde's office.
