The Federal Government remains steadfast in its decision to implement a 240% hike in electricity tariffs for Band A consumers, despite widespread opposition. The hike, announced on April 3, 2024, has sparked backlash from various quarters, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Organised Private Sector.
The NLC vehemently opposes the tariff hike, labeling it as insensitive and unpopular. The organization warns of dire consequences and accuses the government of prioritizing the interests of international financial institutions over those of its citizens.
Manufacturers and organized labor argue that the tariff increase will have detrimental effects on businesses, exacerbate inflation, and stifle economic growth. They criticize the government for withdrawing subsidies and imposing a heavy financial burden on consumers.
In response to the criticism, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, defends the tariff hike, citing the unsustainable nature of power subsidies and the need to allocate resources to other sectors. He maintains that the government's decision is pro-poor and aims to transition to a full cost-reflective tariff over three years.
However, the implementation of the tariff hike faces challenges, as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) improperly applies the new rates to customers outside of Band A. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) fines the AEDC for non-compliance, emphasizing the importance of fair billing practices.
Political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, criticize the tariff hike, warning of increased hardships for Nigerians. The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives calls for the cancellation of the tariff hike, denouncing it as inhumane and exacerbating economic hardships.
Civil society organizations and industry leaders also condemn the tariff increase, describing it as insensitive and detrimental to the well-being of Nigerians. They call for transparency, accountability, and a reevaluation of the government's energy policies.
As tensions escalate between the government and various stakeholders, the fate of the electricity tariff hike remains uncertain, with calls for dialogue and reconsideration echoing across the country.
