"Impeachment Saga Unfolds: Edo Panel Probes Deputy Governor's Alleged Leaks and Perjury"

The seven-member panel appointed by Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate allegations against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu began its proceedings on Wednesday.

Led by retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa, the panel was formed following a resolution by the State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Shaibu.

The Assembly accused Shaibu of leaking government secrets and committing perjury, citing these actions as impeachable offenses.

The panel heard from the Assembly's representative, Mr. Joe Ohaifa, Deputy Clerk, Legal, who outlined the charges against Shaibu. Allegations included leaking confidential government information and providing false statements in court documents.

Shaibu's lawyer, Prof. Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), attempted to halt the proceedings by citing a pending lawsuit in Abuja. However, the panel rejected the request, citing constitutional provisions that prevent courts from interfering in legislative matters.

In response, Awoyale excused himself from the proceedings but emphasized that Shaibu would not waive his right to defend himself.

The panel adjourned the hearing until the following day, allowing Shaibu the opportunity to present his defense.

The impeachment proceedings are seen as the latest development in the strained relationship between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, particularly since Shaibu declared his intention to run for Edo governor.

The panel's decision underscores the ongoing political tension in Edo State and the importance of upholding constitutional processes in addressing governance issues.
