11 Suspects and Vessel Apprehended in Lagos as EFCC Launches Probe into Alleged Oil Theft

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into 11 suspected oil thieves and a vessel, MT SAISNIL II, following their apprehension by the Nigerian Navy.

Mr. Dele Oyewole, the spokesperson for the Commission, confirmed this development in a statement released on Saturday.

The suspects and the vessel were transferred to the EFCC by the Nigerian Navy, specifically the NNS Beecroft stationed in Apapa, Lagos.

According to Oyewole, the vessel and its crew were intercepted and detained on February 7, 2024, by naval officers. They were allegedly engaged in illegal oil bunkering activities and violated the Automatic Identification System (AIS) regulations at the Abo Oilfield in Ogogoro Community, Ondo State.

Oyewole further stated, "The suspects will be brought before the court once investigations are concluded by the Commission’s operatives in its Lagos Command."

This move by the EFCC underscores the commitment to combatting illegal activities in the oil sector and upholding the rule of law.
