Yobe Varsity Student Perishes in Devastating Hostel Fire Outbreak

Shamsiya Murtala, a promising student of the Federal University Gashua in Yobe State, met a heartbreaking fate as a fire engulfed the female hostel where she resided. The inferno, which erupted in the afternoon, ravaged an entire block comprising 29 rooms, accommodating approximately 301 students.


Despite desperate efforts to contain the blaze, Shamsiya, a dedicated 300-level Geography student, succumbed to the flames, tragically losing her life. The news of her untimely demise has sent shockwaves rippling through the university community, casting a pall of grief and sorrow over her peers and mentors alike.


In the wake of this devastating incident, Professor Maimuna Waziri, the Vice-Chancellor, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the university's Senate, Management, staff, and students. Expressing profound sympathy to the affected students and their families, she vowed to initiate a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the cause of the tragic fire outbreak.


As a precautionary measure, the university administration, through a statement issued by Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, the Registrar, instructed all students to evacuate the campus premises immediately and seek refuge in their homes or alternative safe locations until further notice.


This harrowing event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stringent fire safety measures and enhanced emergency response protocols within educational institutions across the country.
