About 100 inmates, including those currently facing death sentences, are appealing for clemency from the Kano state government and the Committee on Prerogative of Mercy. These inmates, housed in the Kano Correctional Centre, encompass a diverse group, ranging from individuals serving life imprisonment to those with lengthy sentences, serious medical conditions, elderly inmates, and others.
The announcement came through Musbahu Mata, the Public Relations Officer of the state Correctional Centre, in a statement released on Thursday. It was disclosed that Suleiman Inuwa, the controller of the state command, submitted the comprehensive list of inmates seeking clemency to Hajiya Bebeji, Chairperson of the Prerogative of Mercy Committee, during the committee's recent visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre located in Janguzu, Kano.
Hajiya Bebeji, while receiving the list, assured the inmates that their cases would be thoroughly reviewed by the government, taking into account their conduct and contributions during their time in custody. She also emphasized the importance of inmates adhering to the regulations of the custodial centre and encouraged them to make positive contributions to society.
Expressing gratitude, the controller extended appreciation to Hajiya Bebeji for her support of the Iftar feeding program conducted within the facility, underscoring the collaborative efforts aimed at promoting rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives within the correctional system.
