WATCH : PEOPLE ARE OLDER THAN THEIR AGE - BLAMES GOVERNOR'S DEFECTION - RESPONDENTS

VIDEO HERE

The political atmosphere in was thrown into fresh controversy following reports of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, defecting to another political party. The move has stirred widespread criticism among Nigerians, who have accused several state governors of using defection as a means to evade post-tenure accountability. Governor Diri’s defection comes amid growing public skepticism toward politicians who frequently switch parties shortly before or after leaving office.

While speaking with our correspondent, angry nigerians express dissatisfaction, arguing that such actions reflect desperation to escape questioning by anti-graft agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

The criticism extended beyond Diri, as Nigerians also mentioned the recent case of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, among others, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over public service.

Political observers say the growing trend of defections has deepened citizens’ mistrust in the political system. Many are calling for stronger laws that make elected officials more accountable regardless of party affiliation.

As reactions continue to pour in, civil society organizations have urged the EFCC and other agencies not to relent in probing past and serving governors suspected of financial mismanagement, warning that “defection must not become a shield for corruption.”

Governor Diri has yet to officially address the backlash or clarify the reasons behind his defection, but the development has once again reignited debate over integrity, transparency, and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
