Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a “clever tax collector” who is determined to impose taxes on virtually everything in the country — including.
Adebayo made the remark on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, where he faulted the administration’s fiscal policies and handling of the petroleum sector.
According to him, President Tinubu’s approach to governance has become increasingly burdensome for ordinary Nigerians, with policies that appear to prioritize revenue generation over public welfare.
He further criticized the president for appointing himself as Minister of Petroleum Resources while the nation’s refineries remain non-functional despite huge investments in turnaround maintenance.
"we gave you refineries to manage, and you appointed yourself Minister of Petroleum. We’ve spent billions on turnaround maintenance, yet the refineries are not working. Because of that, we’re still importing fuel, and now you want to surcharge Nigerians when the refineries are idle. That decision is anti-people and poorly thought out,” he added.
The SDP stalwart lamented that Tinubu, once a key ally of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and a member of the SDP’s pro-democracy movement, has “shifted to the side of moneyed interests” rather than defending the common man.
Adebayo concluded by urging the government to adopt policies that promote productivity and alleviate economic hardship rather than imposing more taxes on citizens already struggling under rising inflation and fuel costs.
