Army Announces Major Shake-Up as COAS Repositions Top Command Structure




The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, has approved a major shake-up in the Nigerian Army, redeploying several senior officers into new strategic and command positions aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and improving internal coordination.

The development, announced in a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant-Colonel Apollonian Anele, on Thursday, affects key departments, formations, and training institutions across the country.

According to the statement, the appointments cut across policy, administration, operations, logistics, training, and civil-military affairs, reflecting the Army’s renewed focus on professionalism and strategic realignment.

Among the newly appointed officers are Major General Bamidele Alabi, redeployed to Army Headquarters Department of Policy and Plans as Chief of Policy and Plans (Army); and Major General Jamal Abdulsalam, who moves to Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Operations.
Similarly, Major General Peter Mala has been appointed Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), while Major General Samson Jiya moves to Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Accounts and Budget.

Other appointments include Major General Mayirenso Saraso, now Chief of Operations (Army); Major General Isa Abdullahi, appointed Chief of Administration (Army); and Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, who assumes duty as Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (Army).
In addition, Major General Abubakar Haruna becomes Commander, Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kontagora, while Major General Philip Ilodibia takes charge as Chief of Defence Space Administration.

The shake-up also saw several corps commanders redeployed. Major General Godwin Mutkut is now Corps Commander, Infantry, Major General Umar Abubakar takes over as Commander, Armour Corps, and Major General John Adeyemo becomes Corps Commander, Artillery.
Major General Mohammed Abdullahi was appointed Corps Commander, Signals, while Major General Taofik Sidick assumes office as Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army).

Other senior officers affected include Major General Abdullahi Ibrahim (Corps Commander, Ordnance), Major General Adeyinka Adereti (Corps Commander, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers), and Major General Nansak Shagaya (Corps Commander, Supply and Transport). Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed was appointed Acting Corps Commander, Education.

The COAS also approved new commandant postings. Major General Oluyemi Olatoye has been appointed Commandant, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, while Major General Emmanuel Mustapha now heads the Nigerian Army Signal School.
Major General Adamu Hassan will command the Nigerian Army School of Artillery, and Brigadier General John Bulus takes charge as Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Finance and Accounts.

New field commanders include Major General Saidu Audu, appointed Force Commander, Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), N’Djamena; Major General Warrah Idris, who becomes Commander, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA; and Major General Oluremi Fadairo, appointed General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, Enugu, and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA.

In addition, Major General Olatokumbo Bello has been named Director, Defence Media Operations, while Brigadier General Samaila Uba was redeployed to Defence Headquarters as Director, Defence Information.

Lieutenant-General Shaibu charged the newly appointed officers to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and strategic foresight in their new assignments. He urged them to sustain ongoing operational momentum, enhance inter-agency cooperation, and uphold the Nigerian Army’s core values of loyalty, integrity, and selfless service.
